In a move that had been expected for weeks, the Seattle Seahawks named Kris Richard their defensive coordinator, promoting the former defensive backs coach to the job formerly held by Dan Quinn, who last week was named the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.
Richard, a former cornerback who played for Pete Carroll at USC, then began his NFL career with the Seahawks, started his coaching career with Carroll at USC, then came to Seattle in 2010.
Richard’s promotion will go over very well in Seattle’s locker room, including with All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman, who last month wondered aloud why Richard wasn’t a candidate for vacant coordinator jobs around the league.
“He took a rag-tag bunch of DBs in 2011 and made ‘em perennial All-Pros and Pro-Bowlers, and you don’t hear his name being mentioned much for D-coordinator jobs and things like that, which I think it should,” Sherman said. “We obviously know what kind of coach he is and what he’s done, but obviously everybody else doesn’t.”
In addition to promoting Richard, the Seahawks also confirmed the hirings of a pair of former University of Miami assistants, Micheal Barrow, who will coach linebackers, and Brennan Carroll, Pete’s son, who will be an assistant offensive line coach.
The Seahawks also added former Pro Bowl linebacker Lofa Tatupu to the coaching staff as an assistant linebackers coach. Tatupu, who as a rookie helped Seattle to its first Super Bowl berth, spent six seasons with the Seahawks.
