Seahawks general manager John Schneider continues to do the rounds on sports radio, appearing on Sports Radio 950 KJR Wednesday a day after appearing on 710 ESPN Seattle.
As was the case a day earlier, Schneider noted that the team isn’t yet sure about Marshawn Lynch’s future, and also said they are looking at ways to get Russell Wilson’s contract extension done without hurting the team’s ability to stay competitive down the road.
Two new topics that were addressed were the pending free agency of cornerback Byron Maxwell and the recovery of Paul Richardson, who tore his ACL in Seattle’s playoff win over Carolina.
When asked about Maxwell, Schneider sounded like he wants the starting corner back, but is also resigned to the fact that the Seahawks might not be able to afford him.
“Based on what the landscape looks like from our eyes, in unrestricted free agency, he would be very highly sought after,” Schneider said. “Now, are we going to give it a good ride and try to do what we feel is appropriate for our organization in trying to keep him? Absolutely. Is it going to be good enough? I can’t answer that. I just really don’t know. We love him, we drafted him, we helped develop him. He has worked his tail off to get to where he is. He really stepped up these last two years… He stepped in and was an extremely reliable guy for us. So where his market goes, I think it should be extremely high. Whether or not we’ll be able to keep him, I’m not sure, but we’re going to do whatever we can to try to do that. We’re going to recruit him and talk to him and try to put together a nice offer for him, but I just can’t tell you that it’s going to be good enough.
When talking about Paul Richardson and the receiver group, Schneider noted that there’s a decent chance Richardson ends up on the physically unable to perform list at the start of the season, only adding to Seattle’s need to add depth at that position.
“His surgery went real well, which is crazy because I’ve never had a doctor tell me that a surgery didn’t go well,” Schneider said. “But no, his surgery went great, and he’s such a freak athlete that I wouldn’t put anything past him, but I think there’s a 50/50 chance he goes into the PUP window, and we need to continue to address that position much like we do every other position. We don’t look at this thing like, ‘What is your No. 1 need or No. 2 need?’ We’re looking at this thing like, ‘How do we improve every position on a daily basis?’ Then what does that look like a month from now or a year from now, and that’s how we’re doing it at the receiver position. That goes for every position.”
