Reports from Venezuela say Mariners pitching prospect Victor Sanchez is “fighting for his life” after being struck in the head by a boat Friday while swimming off a beach at Carupano on the country’s northern central coast.
Sanchez, 20, remains in “critical” condition, according to Dr. Rolando Cobis in a story appearing on lavinotino.com. The website said Cobis performed surgery Saturday on Sanchez to treat a fractured skull.
Cobis told lavintino.com that Sanchez was “critical but stable” condition and characterized the pitcher as being in “vital” danger and “still fighting for his life.”
The Mariners, in part due to federal health (HIPAA) reporting laws, have only confirmed Sanchez, a right-hander, was involved in an accident and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Sanchez, a Venezuelan native, signed with the Mariners as a 16-year-old in 2011 for a $2.5 million bonus. He was 7-6 with a 4.19 ERA last season at Double-A Jackson before making seven starts for Caracas in the Venezuelan Winter League.
Sanchez pitched for the Everett AquaSox in 2012. Sanchez was 6-2 with a 3.18 ERA in 15 games.
