MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — State troopers want to hear from anyone who saw Saturday night’s crash of a school bus carrying members of the King’s High School boys basketball team.
The bus overturned as it was exiting southbound I-5 onto westbound Highway 104 around 10:10 p.m., troopers said. There were no serious injuries among the 15 students or two coaches from the Christian school in Shoreline, who were returning from a district championship game in Mount Vernon. About half of the occupants were taken to area hospitals for minor treatment or observation.
The driver lost control after the wheels on the right side of the bus went onto the shoulder, troopers said. The bus hit the guardrail and two road signs. Then the driver steered left back onto the roadway and over-steered right, causing the bus to rotate broadside and roll onto its left side.
The driver said the brakes failed. The muffler also had come loose earlier on the trip and had to be refastened, troopers said.
Anyone who saw the collision or events leading up to it are asked to call detective Sgt. Jerry Cooper or detective Ed Collins at 360-805-1153.
