On Feb. 11, KING-5 News presented a story it considered very newsworthy: Seattle Water is requesting a monthly increase of $4.11 on all Seattle residents’ water bills. They noted that doing this would require voters to approve it, and the Seattle City Council could then put it into action.
Yet, here in Everett, the utilities department has been ratcheting up the monthly charges for water and sewer over a period of 18 months, or even longer. Each increase is even higher than the $4.11 monthly request by Seattle Water.
In January 2013, Everett billing was about $125 for two months. With constant monthly increases, we are now in January 2015 at $185 for two months. Monthly increases seem to be constantly up by $5.
Yet, if KING-5 sees a mere $4.11 increase in Seattle as newsworthy, how is it Everett Utilities gets away with these incremental increases for larger than Seattle is requesting?
When will they reach a ceiling price, if ever?
