SEATTLE — A federal judge has sentenced to members of the Lummi Indian Tribe to prison for selling heroin, meth and crack cocaine.
Prosecutors say 45-year-old Tanya Jefferson was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Her husband, 37-year-old John Jefferson must spend three years and eight months behind bars.
The couple pleaded guilty in November to selling drugs in 2013. They were caught when they sold heroin or meth to a person working with law enforcement five times. The Lummi police and FBI worked together to make the arrests.
After Friday’s sentencing, Acting U.S. Attorney Annette Hayes said heroin abuse is a growing problem in Western Washington and beyond, where they’ve seen an alarming increase in overdose deaths. She commended the Lummi Nation police for leading the effort to prevent heroin use.
