SEATTLE — The South Park Bridge over the Duwamish Waterway is stuck in the up position and will remain closed to traffic until Tuesday.
The Seattle Times reported that the bridge is stuck open because of a broken transmission pump. King County spokeswoman Rochelle Ogershok says that pump will need to be rebuilt or replaced. She says that work could take until Tuesday.
She says the bridge on 14th and 16th avenues south carries about 20,000 vehicles daily between South Park and an industrial area near East Marginal Way South.
Washington State Department of Transportation officials say motorists should use the First Avenue South Bridge until South Park reopens.
Ogershok says the bridge was closed for many years and while a detour is inconvenient, people know the drill. She doesn’t think Monday’s traffic should be a problem.
