Cousins blame each other in Marysville gunfire

MARYSVILLE — A young man called 911 on Monday to report gunshots that have since landed him in jail.

The suspect, who turned 18 earlier this month, now is being held along with his cousin, 15, for investigation of drive-by shooting.

Marysville police say the pair are blaming each other for firing at least 11 shots from a .40-caliber handgun. The gunfire occurred just after 3 p.m. in the 3600 block of 73rd Drive NE in the Sunnyside neighborhood.

No people were injured or property damaged, Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux said. Witnesses said that the shots came from a white car that had been heading north.

About four minutes after the shots rang out, the 18-year-old reportedly called 911 to say that he’d heard the gunfire and that somebody had slashed a tire on his vehicle.

Police went to the 4600 block of 67th Avenue NE. They found a silver 2002 Audi and four young people who were changing a flat tire.

Officers were told that the tire had been slashed while the group had been visiting friends. They denied knowing anything about the gunfire.

Police separated the group and searched near their car. They found a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun hidden along a fence line.

That’s when the 18-year-old reportedly said he and his cousin had been in Sunnyside when the gunfire broke out. He said they spotted a man who earlier had threatened his cousin with a handgun, and that the 15-year-old began shooting in the air, according to a police report.

The 15-year-old said his older cousin was the shooter and had fired the gun out of the sunroof as he drove the car.

The weapon was seized as evidence. The younger teen was booked into juvenile detention. The 18-year-old was being held Monday at the county jail. He has an extensive juvenile history and last year faced adult charges in a robbery. That case ended with a misdemeanor assault conviction, records show.
