Classification: 1A
Records: Kalama 20-4; King’s 20-3.
AP Rankings: Kalama (No. 7); King’s (No. 1).
How they got to regionals: Kalama defeated Elma 59-35 in the third-place game in the District 4 tournament to capture the final regional berth. King’s defeated Lynden Christian 38-33 to win the Northwest District championship and went on to defeat Seattle Academy 70-26 in the bi-district championship.
Players to watch: Kalama—Kaelyn Shipley, So., F; Parker Esary, So., P; Haley Bannister, Sr., G. King’s—Savanna Hanson, Sr., G; Ashley Osborn, Sr., G; Daylee Hanson, Jr., G.
Breakdown: Osborn and the Hanson sisters account for better than 37 of the 56 points King’s averages per game. While the Knights are strong from the perimeter, they could have their hands full with Kalama’s frontline of Kaelyn Shipley and Parker Esary, who combined average 29 points and nearly 24 rebounds per game. It’s a tough regional draw for the Knights, but shouldn’t stop them from getting back to Yakima for the quarterfinals.
