SEATTLE — Emergency managers in Grays Harbor County are using Saturday’s anniversary of the Nisqually Earthquake to remind people to be prepared for future quakes.
The earthquake at 10:54 a.m. on Feb. 28, 2001 caused an estimated $2 billion in damage and injured more than 400 people from Seattle to Grays Harbor County.
Among the impacts of that quake, the Capitol Dome in Olympia needed extensive repairs and lawmakers had to continue their work in temporary quarters.
A recent survey by the American Red Cross found only 30 percent of families had at least elements of an emergency plan.
Elements of a good plan include:
An out-of-state relative for everyone to contact.
Knowledge of school and work disaster plans.
Emergency kits at home and in the car.
Copies of important papers and contact phone numbers in one spot.
Some cash in small bills.
A photo inventory of your home.
A portable radio.
