Regarding the letter, “Money trumps safety for Murray”: The writer believes that Sen. Patty Murray should be voted out of office for her vote against the Keystone Pipeline. The writer thinks Murray’s doing so means oil trains will continue to run through Washington state.
Oil trains will still run through Washington. Keystone Pipeline would have been built north to south, not east to west, so to say that all crude oil would have been sent through the Keystone, relieving Washington of crude oil shipments, is not realistic.
Crude oil must still get to Washington refineries and to Washington ports for shipment to other countries. Even if Keystone were voted into law (and there are so many more reasons for it not to be voted in, especially potential environmental issues), shipments of crude would still be coming through our state.
It would be much wiser to urge railroad magnate Warren Buffett to beef up maintenance of his railroads so that there is less potential for derailment and to require use of state-of-the-art rail cars for crude shipments (in other words, get rid of old rail cars and replace them with the better-made new ones) than squander efforts on putting a senior, well-respected senator out of office.
