OLYMPIA — The Washington House of Representatives has passed a bill that would expand access to computer science education.
The bi-partisan proposal was sponsored by Reps. Drew Hansen, D-Bainbridge Island, and Chad Magendanz, R-Issaquah, and approved by members of both parties on Thursday.
House Bill 1813 would establish statewide computer science standards, expand scholarships for teachers interested in computer science, and would establish a computer science endorsement for educators.
The bill sponsors are separately pursuing $2 million for professional development in computer science for teachers, plus technology equipment for schools and outreach to kids from ethnic groups who have not traditionally sought computer science careers.
The computer science bill now moves on to the Senate for consideration.
