Will Blackmon was a victim of the Seattle Seahawks’ incredible cornerback depth in 2013, and as a result was cut at the end of training camp. Now the the 30-year-old Blackmon has re-signed with Seattle to bolster depth at cornerback, which has now become a position of need for Seattle.
Blackmon, who spent the past two seasons in Jacksonville, appearing in 23 games, starting 12, was released by the Jaguars last month. Bringing him back makes a lot of sense for Seattle, which is expected to lose Byron Maxwell to Philadelphia as soon as free agents can officially sign with new teams on Tuesday, and which could be without Jeremy Lane for some or all of the 2015 season, the result of a broken arm and torn ACL in the Super Bowl.
The last time Blackmon was a member of the Seahawks, he didn’t make the final cuts, the result of a roster that, at cornerback, included Richard Sherman, Maxwell, Lane, Tharold Simon, Brandon Bowner, Walter Thurmond, Ron Parker and Antoine Winfield, a three-time Pro Bowler who retired when he saw the writing on the wall and realized he wasn’t going to make the team.
Now Blackmon has a very real chance to not just make the roster, but compete for playing time, though the Seahawks will continue to look to add talent. The Seahawks could be a landing spot for veterans Tramon Williams and Cary Williams, and they will almost certainly address cornerback in the draft as well.
The 6-foot, 204-pound Blackmon was drafted by Green Bay in the fourth-round of the 2006 draft, so Seahawks general manager John Schneider has a background him going back to their time together with the Packers. Blackmon also has experience as a returner, which could prove useful for a team that never settled on permanent return solutions last year.
