SEATTLE — The Washington state Transportation Department says it will postpone a sign installation project on Seattle’s Aurora Avenue North that was expected to take as long as three months and cause delays for as many as 25,000 transit riders — and the cars behind them.
The Seattle Times reported the project had been scheduled to start Wednesday morning. The state announced the postponement Monday, with no new start time set.
The installation of four sign frames might close the Aurora bus lanes for 12 weeks southbound and eight weeks northbound, leaving two general-traffic lanes each way. Two of the frames are expected to hold cameras, signs and transponder readers for future Highway 99 tunnel tolls.
Transportation Department officials say the agency decided it was in the public’s best interest to postpone the work because there is so much other construction and road work in the South Lake Union area.
