THE DALLES, Ore. — Authorities in The Dalles say a person died Monday in a fire at a residence where shots were fired earlier as sheriff’s deputies tried to serve legal papers.
The name of the victim was not immediately made public, and the authorities didn’t say how the person died.
Wasco County sheriff’s deputies tried to serve the papers about 8:30 a.m. Monday, heard shots inside and called for backup. Later, smoke began to emerge.
After more than four hours, a State Police SWAT team approached the house but had to back off when a big fire broke out.
Firefighters put it out, and the body was discovered as they worked their way through the building Monday afternoon.
