SALEM, Ore. — A 73-year-old Salem motorcyclist has been released from the hospital a month after he collided with a van and was pitched over the side of a bridge into the Willamette River.
The fall was estimated at 60 to 80 feet.
William Chamberland was rescued by a volunteer firefighter who happened to be boating upstream of the bridge.
The firefighter held him beside the boat and did CPR until rescue workers could take over.
The Salem Statesman Journal reported Wednesday that Chamberland was initially in critical condition, but his condition improved during a stay at Salem Hospital. A hospital spokesman confirmed that Chamberland had been released.
Police describe their investigation into the accident as ongoing.
