Anyone with just a little bit of common sense knows that the slide at Highway 530, not at Oso, was not just a slide but an implosion. Water trapped behind millions of tons of dirt broke loose to create that kind of disaster, hence all the mud. Logging was not the reason this happened. Of course environmentalists need an excuse to keep any kind of timber harvest from happening. Making sure that from now on environmental studies to keep “slides” from happening will create the impossibility of timber harvest, due to the high cost of the studies, keeping every one out of their playground.
Darrington, as well as a lot of other small towns, depending on this renewable resource, used to be a thriving little town. However, since the listing of the spotted owl in the ‘70s, it has become a shadow of its former existence. Creating a heaven for people on social existence for a living. Trees are a renewable resource. Rather than the redwood forrest, which can live for thousand of years, western hemlock and fir trees do not. Take a good look at all the dead trees all over the mountains, just waiting for a lightning strike. The people in Darrington are the best environmentalists there are. After all, our bread and butter depend on it.
