Sno-King Chorale’s ‘unusual concert’ a big challenge

LYNNWOOD — The Sno-King Community Chorale offers a program Saturday of music from the 1890s and the 1990s.

“It’s an unusual concert for us,” said director Frank DeMiero.

First on the program is Gabriel Faure’s Requiem in D minor, a beautiful and popular work accessible to community choirs. That’s not the unusual part, DeMiero said.

It is paired with the contemporary “Return to Innocence” by David Gillingham.

The piece is scored for choir and percussion, and the performance features the local Cascade Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Ian Alvarez.

“Ian is the person who suggested we perform the work,” DeMiero said. “We are very excited about it. It’s probably one of the bigger challenges our chorale has undertaken.”

To learn more about Gillingham’s work, DeMiero phoned the composer at Central Michigan University. Gillingham, a professor there, is perhaps best known for his compositions for wind ensemble and concert band.

“The Gillingham piece we are performing is very modern,” DeMiero said. “It speaks to the integrity of innocence. It’s about the return to the beauty of sincerity and honesty.”

DeMiero speaks highly of his chorale and its efforts.

“The beauty of this group is that we can tackle an eclectic mix of music,” he said.

The Faure features chorale members Melanie Hingson, soprano, and Tom Hingson, baritone. The Hingsons, of Edmonds, also are members of the Seattle Opera chorus. In his day job, Tom Hingson is director of Everett Transit.

“The Hingsons are an exceptional couple and, as always, a joy to have perform with us,” DeMiero said. “I’ve known Melanie since she was a student at Edmonds High School.”

The chorale’s orchestra, primarily members of Cascade Symphony Orchestra, also perform in the Faure, and Cascade’s viola section leader, Roberta McBride, has a solo.

Also on the program is John Rutter’s “For the Beauty of the Earth,” along with other music from the Hingsons and the percussion ensemble.
