MARYSVILLE — The Marysville Pilchuck baseball team is getting exactly what it wanted out of its non-conference games.
Strong competition.
The Tomahawks continued their impressive non-league schedule with Cascade, which got to the regional round of the 4A state tournament last season, on Tuesday. In a back-and-forth battle, Marysville Pilchuck scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Tomahawks past Cascade 4-3 at Marysville Pilchuck High School.
It’s a tough non-conference schedule,” said Tomahawks head coach Kurt Koshelnik. “I’m telling them job No. 1 is that we’re getting better everyday. Wins and losses will take care of themselves.”
After Cascade got on the board first in the top of the first inning, Marysville Pilchuck (2-1 overall) responded in the bottom half of the opening frame. The Tomahawks again retook the lead in the sixth, after Trey Southard doubled in one run and Marysville Pilchuck added another in the inning for the game’s final run.
Southard (2-for-3) led the way for the Tomahawks with two RBI.
“We scored (in the bottom of the sixth) and that kind of gave us life again,” Koshelnik said. “We’ve just got a bunch of grinders. We’re plugging away.”
Marysville Pilchuck had to rally once again after Cascade (0-4) took the lead in the top of the sixth with a two-run single up the middle by Austin Pinorini.
But Tomahawks’ senior reliever Logan Sewell struck out three Bruins in the final two innings to earn his first win of the season.
Playing at Marysville Pilchuck High School, the site of a deadly shooting on Oct. 24, Cascade head coach Scott Stencil and the Bruins presented the Tomahawks with an “MP Strong” poster, a signed baseball and a card. The Marysville Pilchuck team went to shake the Cascade players’ hands and thank them after they finished their postgame discussion.
“They went out of their way, just above and beyond,” Koshelnik said. “It was really nice. They were awesome. A really classy bunch.”
