BRYANT — A mother black bear and two cubs were spotted earlier this week on the Centennial Trail about 4 miles north of here, near Snohomish County’s border with Skagit County.
The bears were seen crossing the trail Monday near its north end at Nakashima Barn, according to the county parks department.
Officials advise people in the area to be cautious when using the trail. If they see a black bear, they should avoid direct eye contact and should not approach the bear. Standing tall, waving arms and being loud may scare a bear away. Playing dead should be a last resort if the bear attacks and is not scared off by fighting back aggressively, according to the county.
Though reports of a bear sighting in Lake Stevens have circulated on social media, city and police officials did not know of any bears seen in the area. The county has not reported a bear sighting on the Lake Stevens stretch of the Centennial Trail.
