SEATTLE — Authorities say a large commercial tractor-trailer rig full of salmon that overturned Tuesday afternoon, blocking a section of the southbound lanes of State Route 99 in south Seattle, has finally been removed.
The Seattle Transportation Department reported the truck and trailer were finally removed from the highway at about 11:30 p.m.
The crash caused gridlock that stalled evening rush-hour traffic for hours.
Police say the truck driver was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Some people stuck on buses decided to get off and walk. Traffic slowed on surface streets and Interstate 5 through Seattle.
At one point, transportation officials said a cross-town trip in a different area of the city — from Elliott Bay to I-5 — took an hour. That’s a distance of a little more than a mile.
