MILL CREEK — Firefighters made quick work of a small fire at the Mill Creek YMCA on Friday morning, but smoke damage temporarily shut down part of the facility.
No one was injured.
Fire District 1 crews responded at 6:23 a.m. to an automatic fire alarm at the YMCA branch next door to their station on Puget Park Drive, in the Silver Firs neighborhood of unincorporated Snohomish County.
People also called to report smoke in a cardio-fitness room just south of the main YMCA building, Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said. The half-dozen or so people working out there at the time were able to leave safely.
Firefighters extinguished a small fire in an adjacent maintenance room, Hynes said. The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office identified the cause as a battery charger for a power drill. Fire damage was contained to the maintenance room and is estimated at $5,000.
The YMCA main building housing the pool, gymnasium and children’s facilities was unaffected by the fire and remained open, said Kyla Smith, the executive director of the branch. Employees hoped to re-open the cardio and weight room Friday afternoon.
