I read with some concern the March 19 article, “Nonresidents will pay fee to park at popular Lighthouse Park in Mukilteo.”
No where did I find in the article the solution for people who “walk on” the Mukilteo ferry. We have friends who live on Whidbey Island, and called us to join them for a movie in Langley recently. They would pick us up at the ferry terminal so we wouldn’t have to pay for driving over. We searched and searched the town over and found no free space to park for an unknown period of time. Everything was limited, and now it appears it will be limited even more.
There are times when our friends would like us to stay for several hours (i.e. 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.) to fully enjoy the day. But other than taking our chance in illegal parking that we won’t be found out, we found no other options. Needless to say, we paid the fee and drove on the ferry (not very environmental, I know). Sounds like what is being proposed in the article is that the city doesn’t want walk-on ferry passengers, or at the very least, passengers that arrive by car. Many utilize the facilities nearby either before or after coming back, so the Mukilteo businesses benefit from them.
If I’m not mistaken, I believe the Edmonds/Clinton ferry has available parking for walk-on passengers on both sides.
Maybe the Washington State Ferry System needs to step up on behalf of walk-on passengers at Mukilteo.
