EVERETT — Ben Betker is celebrating the start of the playoffs in style.
The Everett Silvertips defenseman signed a three-year entry-level contract with the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers, the Oilers announced Thursday. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Betker, a 20-year-old from Cranbrook, B.C., was selected by Edmonton in the sixth round of the 2013 NHL draft.
Betker has been one of Everett’s most-important players this season. The towering 6-foot-6 defender, who is one of Everett’s alternate captains, has been a permanent member of the Tips’ top defensive pairing. In 64 games he had six goals, 25 assists and was a plus-19.
Betker is in his third season with Everett. He is the last remaining piece from the 2012 trade that sent the rights to Seth Jones to Portland. In his three seasons with the Tips he had 14 goals and 44 assists in 200 games.
