SUMPTER, Ore. — Oregon State Police say a fish and wildlife trooper managed to rescue a disabled 81-year-old woman from a burning house in eastern Oregon.
Lt. Josh Brooks said Monday that Baker City-based Trooper Brad Duncan was patrolling Sunday afternoon in the town of Sumpter when he spotted a vehicle on fire with one person trying unsuccessfully to extinguish the flames. Noticing a large propane tank nearby, Duncan warned the people around the burning vehicle to back away.
The trooper learned a nearby home was owned by an elderly woman who was believed to still be inside. He and a firefighter went to check as the fire spread to the house. Brooks says Duncan located the woman and her son still inside the home and was told she was unable to stand or walk on her own.
As smoke poured in through the door and the house began to burn, Duncan carried the woman out of the house to safety.
Firefighters later put out the blaze.
