Lynnwood’s Pivec named 3A girls Player of the Year

SEATTLE — The awards keep coming for Lynnwood junior Mikayla Pivec, who was named the Associated Press girls basketball 3A State Player of the Year on Tuesday.

Pivec helped lead Lynnwood to its first ever girls basketball state championship in March and was named tournament MVP after her 31 point, 17 rebound performance in a 54-42 win over Cleveland in the championship game. Since winning the championship, Pivec was named The Herald’s All-Area Player of the Year and the Washington State Gatorade Player of the Year in girls basketball. She averaged 20.4 points and 12.4 rebounds per game this season for the Royals.

King’s senior guard Savanna Hanson also won a player of the year award, taking the honor for the 1A girls classification.

The AP also announced the All-State teams on Tuesday.

Snohomish senior Collin Kane was among five players to earn honorable mention in 4A boys basketball, as was Marysville Pilchuck senior Michael Painter in 3A and Shorecrest junior Drew Magaoay in 2A. King’s sophomore Corey Kispert was named to the 1A first-team.

On the girls side, Snohomish junior Madeline Smith was named to the 4A honorable mention list, Pivec was named to the 3A first-team. Her teammate Jordyn Edwards earned honorable mention, as did Arlington senior Jessica Ludwig. Hanson was named to the 1A first-team.

In addition to naming a player of the year in each classification, the AP also named an overall player of the year for both the boys and girls. Those awards went to Rainier Beach senior Dejounte Murray (3A boys) and Gonzaga Prep senior Laura Stockton (4A girls), who were the players of the year in their classifications.

The 4A boys player of the year was Federal Way’s Viont’e Daniels, the 2A boys player of the year was Sedro-Woolley’s Jackson Price and the 1A boys winner was Zillah’s Justin Dunsmore. Zach Walton of Morton-White Pass (2B) and Trazil Lane of Lummi (1B) were the small school award winners.

In addition to Pivec, Stockton and Hanson, Mark Morris’ Kourtney Eaton was the 2A player of the year, Okanogan’s Jill Townsend was the 2B winner and Colton’s Zoe Moser won the 1B award. Pivec was the only unanimous selection and all six girls honored as player of the year led their teams to state titles.

All the winners were picked by voting from sports writers and editors from around the state.
