SNOHOMISH — Work was being completed here Tuesday after two dugouts were destroyed by arson at Glacier Peak High School in February.
The dugouts at the varsity girls’ softball field are scheduled to open for a fast-pitch game at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Glacier Peak will face a team from Shorecrest High School for the second game of the season.
The Snohomish County fire marshal determined that the fires were set. The first blaze occurred Feb. 13. The second was discovered Feb. 16. School was not in session either day.
Kristin Foley, a spokeswoman for the Snohomish School District, said many people and businesses reached out to help rebuild the dugouts. The damaged wooden dugouts were removed. Fresh foundations were poured and the new dugouts were constructed from concrete blocks.
“They’re beautiful,” Foley said.
Fencing and electrical wires that connected to the scoreboard also had to be replaced.
The district’s insurance covered some damage, Foley said. Donated or reduced-cost building materials and labor also helped cover costs.
Foley said the Lowe’s Heroes employee volunteer program will be recognized at the Snohomish School Board meeting April 15 for its work in getting the dugouts ready for softball season.
