MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon scored two goals in the second half to eliminate Lake Stevens in the first round of the 4A District Tournament tournament Saturday.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the the 44th minute with a far-post cross from Junior Santacruz that Jaime Rivera snuck past Vikings keeper Vaughn Silver to put Mount Vernon on the board. In the 70th minute, Mount Vernon struck again, firing two shots that rang off the crossbar. The rebound from the second shot found the foot of Calvin Schleppy, who put the ball into the back of the net.
Mount Vernon moves on to face Snohomish in the second round at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Snohomish High School.
