MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Andrew Watters liked what he saw.
The Mountlake Terrace baseball coach’s star senior, Jason Shevenko, was at the plate with the game tied and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning. Shevenko, who was 3-for-3 to that point in the game, ripped his fourth single of the day — the first of four consecutive RBI base hits — as the Hawks’ big inning led them past Edmonds-Woodway 7-2 in a Wesco 3A South game Wednesday evening at Mountlake Terrace High School.
“He’s a veteran. He’s been doing this for four years at the varsity level,” Watters said. “He’s in that spot in the lineup and we want him up there.”
Both teams battled to a 2-2 tie going into the sixth when the Hawks made their move. Mountlake Terrace (5-4 league, 6-5 overall) loaded the bases before an infield single by Shevenko drove in the go-ahead run. Jared Maxfield, Ben Reijonen and Zayn Phillips followed suit with RBI singles and Adam Lorraine capped the scoring with a bases-loaded walk.
“I think, collectively, we had good at bats,” Watters said. “We showed some patience and drew some walks. We got good pitches to hit. That’s a great sign for our lineup as a whole.”
“Hitting’s contagious,” said Edmonds-Woodway coach Dan Somoza. “They got a hit, and another hit and another hit — I think it was four in a row. It all started with a walk or two. Usually walks are followed by hits.”
Along with Shevenko, Drew Serres batted 3-for-4 with a run scored and Reijonen (2-for-4) added a run scored.
“They’re our leaders,” Watters said. “They came up big today. I think that they’re confident players. It worked out great today.”
It was the second consecutive five-run win over Edmonds-Woodway (3-5, 4-6) for Mountlake Terrace, which clinched its first series win of the year.
“For two games now, against those guys, we’ve had good at-bats and been able to get guys on base and that’s the real key,” Watters said. “We’re coming off two weeks where we’ve really struggled. They’ve rededicated themselves, the players have, and we’ve had two good wins this week.
“For us, because of where we’re at, this is a huge week for us,” Watters continued. “I couldn’t be happier just to be in this position. We’re in a tough spot. It’s a real dogfight to get into the playoffs right now. We’re aware of it. I’m really proud of our players stepping up and putting ourselves in a good position this week.”
The other big performance for the Hawks came from senior pitcher Raiden Silva. The reliever pitched three scoreless innings to earn his fourth victory of the year — all of which have been in relief.
“He has been incredible for our team all year,” Watters said. “He’s been a great go-to guy off our bench, pitching relief, and he deserves a lot of credit. He’s been shutting teams down.”
Warriors leadoff hitter Chantz Justice was 3-for-4 with a run scored and Nick Hull batted 2-for-3 with an RBI.
“They hit the ball hard here and there and had some breaks go their way and that’s baseball,” Somoza said. “We had some breaks go our way earlier. We just want to compete out there every single time. We just came up a little short today.”
Somoza said Edmonds-Woodway will regroup and look to bounce back in the third game of the series on Friday.
“Just move on,” Somoza said. “Baseball’s a tough sport and that’s the only thing you can do. You can’t control the past.”
