TACOMA — Several dozen officers and others turned out Thursday to honor Barney, the Tacoma police narcotics dog who died last month after ingesting methamphetamine during a drug investigation.
The News Tribune reports the 11-year-old black Labrador mix was remembered as dedicated, loyal and hard-working at a memorial service held at Tacoma Police headquarters.
K-9 unit officers escorted the dog’s ashes pass a line of saluting officers.
Tacoma Police Chief Donald Ramsdell spoke at the service.
Barney died March 25 after touching his nose to meth during a drug raid in Puyallup. He was with officers who were serving a search warrant.
Police say during his five years with the department, Barney found 236 pounds of illegal narcotics and $1.8 million in cash.
