SEATTLE — Federal prosecutors say the U.S. Secret Service agents who arrested a Russian man in the Maldives last year on hacking charges followed all laws and procedures so his indictment should not be dismissed.
Lawyers for Roman Seleznev had filed a motion last week asking a judge to throw out the 40-count indictment charging him with hacking into U.S. businesses and stealing credit card data. They claimed his arrest was an illegal abduction so he should be released.
But federal prosecutors responded by saying the agents secured help from the Maldives police when they arrested Seleznev at the airport in July. They flew him on a chartered jet to Guam, where he went before a U.S. District judge. She found no “outrageous conduct” by the agents and did not object to the arrest. He was then flown to Seattle.
Prosecutors urged the judge to deny Seleznev’s motion.
