SAMMAMISH — Stanwood’s unbeaten record came to an end Thursday, as the Spartans fell to Eastside Catholic 19 – 5 in a boys high school lacrosse game Thursday at Eastside Catholic High School.
Winners of five straight to start the season, Stanwood fell behind early and struggled to keep up, trailing 12–4 at the half. Then the Spartans gave up five goals in the third and two unanswered goals in the final quarter on the way to their first loss of the spring.
Despite the loss to a Crusaders squad that has won seven straight after dropping its season opener, the Spartans still remain deadlocked with Kamiak and Sehome-Bellingham for second place in the Division I Wesco/NW Conference, just a half game behind Everett.
Alex Major and Glen Bennett led the scoring for Stanwood with two goals apiece and Kane Ayling added another goal for the Spartans. Stanwood goaltenders Chris Blackwell and Jeremy Smith combined for 11 saves.
Division I Metro-leading Eastside Catholic was led by James Wehe with six goals and five assists.
Stanwood (5-1-0) faces Lynden (2-4-0) at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 24 at Bender Fields in Lynden. Eastside Catholic (7-1-0) will host Kennedy Catholic (2-1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
