20 Riverside headlines Record Store Day show in Everett

When 20 Riverside heard that the guys from Everett Music Initiative were organizing a Record Store Day event to support Bargain CDs, Records &Tapes, the members of the band had an idea.

Why not make like the Beatles and play on top of Bargain CDs?

Well …

“It would have been totally punk rock, but it’s also completely impossible,” Everett Music Initiative’s Steven Graham said of the band playing on the roof of the building along Broadway.

The Everett band’s heart was in the right place, though. And instead of an impractical roof-top rock show, 20 Riverside will play a regular rock show that will help support Bargain CDs.

20 Riverside will headline Saturday night’s Record Store Day show at The Cannery, with all proceeds from the night going to Bargain CDs, the only independent record store in Snohomish County. Everett band Crystal Desert and Bellingham band Vacationeer will also play. The concert begins at 8 p.m.

“The bands are donating the money from their sets,” Graham said. “That’s big for (Bargain CDs) and for our music community.”

Tickets are $10 online and at the door. Concertgoers can also receive a free ticket with any purchase from Bargain CDs on the day of the show.

“It moves inventory, but it also lets people know that he’s there,” Graham said.

20 Riverside, which plays a mix of ska, funk and hip hop, hasn’t played an Everett club show in the past year and Saturday night will be its first time playing The Cannery. The band is planning to release its second album soon.

“It’s a total party when they play,” Graham said of 20 Riverside. “They’re just pure fun.”

Vacationeer is a two-piece that plays ambient electronic music. Crystal Desert is a psychedelic rock band.

Graham said he’s trying to convince Bargain CDs owner Gordy Arlin to curate a few crates of albums to bring to the show so concertgoers can pick over and buy music. Also local bands I Will Keep Your Ghost, Shark the Herald and Preacher’s Wife will be selling their records at the show.

Graham said he hopes that people realize Bargain CDs is more than just a used CD and vinyl shop.

“He’s got cool old posters, and amazing stuff from Seattle’s grunge history on the walls,” Graham said. “Going into Gordy’s shop is not a normal shopping experience. I hope people have a good experience with Gordy and roll the dice on a new record.”
