Dairy Ambassador candidates named

The 2015 Snohomish County Dairy Ambassador coronation will be held April 18 at the Holiday Inn in Everett. The event will honor outgoing Ambassador Olivia Russel, of Stanwood, as six young women vie to take her place.

The 2015 Dairy Ambassador candidates:

Alex Alldredge, of Snohomish, is a senior at Monroe High School and active in FFA, holding various leadership roles and participating in many volunteer events. She has served as an FFA Dairy barn ambassador at the Evergreen State Fair the past three years.

Becca Bartelheimer, of Snohomish, is a junior at Snohomish High School and plans to attend Washington State University after graduation. Bartelheimer is involved in 4-H, FFA, the Washington Jr. Holstein Association and serves as the Washington State and Western National Jersey Queen.

Eryn Byrd-Peterson, of Monroe, is a junior at Monroe High School where she is active in FFA, serving as an officer and participating in various competitions. Byrd-Peterson plans to become a large-animal veterinarian.

Allyson Carothers, of Monroe, is a senior at Monroe High School and is active in FFA, serving as an officer and participating numerous competitions at the district and state level. Carothers volunteers at Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center. She plans to attend Everett Community College to study environmental science with an emphasis on ecology and agriculture.

Janneylee Ceja, of Arlington, is a junior at Arlington High School. Ceja participated in 4-H and has assisted with milking and other tasks on local dairies. She was an honor roll student at Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center, where she completed the dental assisting program, and plans to attend the Everett Community College dental hygiene program.

Kaitlyn Meissner, of Arlington, is a junior at Stanwood High School where she is active in FFA, serving as a chapter officer and participating in events at the district and state level. She also is active in the Washington Jr. Holstein Association, and has worked as an assistant milk tester. Meissner wants to continue in the dairy industry, perhaps becoming a DHIA milk tester.

Dairy Ambassadors represent the Snohomish County dairy industry through speaking engagements, educational presentations, fair and parade appearances, and other activities. After completing a one-year term, county ambassadors are eligible to compete for the state title.

League recognizes volunteers’ efforts

The Assistance League of Everett recently honored its volunteers who knitted and crocheted hats and scarves for students served by Operation School Bell. Operation School Bell provides new school clothing provided by Assistance League of Everett. During the 2014-15 school year, 40 women donated more than 24,800 volunteer hours making more than 3,100 hats or scarves.

Operation School Bell Chair Mary Ann McCord said the children feel like a special grandma made a one-of-a kind hat and scarf just for them.

Chamber plans to celebrate volunteers

The Snohomish City Council has proclaimed April as Volunteer Month in Snohomish. The Snohomish Chamber of Commerce plans to present its 2014 Volunteer and Special Recognition awards at a luncheon meeting, 11:30 a.m. April 21 at Faith Assembly Church, 1220 22nd St.

Kim Thunder also will be recognized for her service as a chamber office volunteer.

The meeting is open to the public; however, RSVP is requested to manager@cityofsnohomish.com. Luncheon cost is $15 members, $18 nonmembers.

Red Cross lauds its volunteers

The American Red Cross of Snohomish County is honoring more than 540 chapter volunteers during National Volunteer Week, April 12-18. More than 90 percent of the Red Cross workforce is composed of volunteers.

“The landslide near Oso was an important reminder that Red Cross volunteers have a critical role to play in helping our communities prepare, respond and recover in the event of a disaster,” said Chuck Morrison, executive director of the Snohomish County chapter.

42 graduate from Citizens Academy

The Lynnwood Police Department recently finished its latest Citizens Academy with more than 42 graduates, 21 of whom plan to interview to become volunteers with the Citizens Patrol, VIPS (Volunteers in Public Safety), and the Explorers Post.

The annual 13-week free course familiarizes citizens with common police procedures, activities and investigative techniques.
