SEATTLE — Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced plans to open a new 100-bed homeless shelter on city-owned property.
Murray says the city will partner with the Downtown Emergency Service Center to fund the new shelter. The center’s deputy director Daniel Malone says the collaboration will provide secure temporary housing as opposed to sleeping on Seattle streets.
The city has allocated $350,000 to fund the project. It also is working with the human services and finance departments to find city-owned property that would be appropriate for temporary housing.
Murray says the new facility should be ready to open its doors by late summer 2015.
