Hazen basketball star commits to UW

SEATTLE — Another highly rated, in-state prospect announced a commitment to play basketball for the Washington Huskies over the weekend.

Dominic Green, a 6-foot-6 small forward from Hazen High School in Renton, becomes the eighth addition to Washington’s roster next season — and the sixth incoming freshman in a recruiting class already ranked by Scout.com as the ninth-best in the nation.

Green, who broke former UW guard Jason Hamilton’s career scoring record at Hazen, is rated as a four-star recruit and the No. 77 prospect in the 2015 class by Scout.com. He previously signed a national letter of intent to play for Arizona State, but ASU granted him a full release from that letter after firing coach Herb Sendek.

The Huskies’ incoming class already included four recruits rated in Scout.com’s top 100 — 6-foot-5 guard Dejounte Murray (Rainier Beach), 5-foot-11 guard David Crisp (Brewster Academy, formerly of Clover Park and Rainier Beach); 6-foot-6 small forward Matisse Thybulle (Eastside Catholic), and 6-foot-8 forward Marquese Chriss (Elk Grove, California).

UW also has signed 6-foot-8 forward Devenir Duruisseau and 6-foot-10 junior-college transfer Malik Dime, who is already enrolled and on campus.

Green’s shooting ability — touted as his primary strength — should provide immediate help to a Huskies team that made just 33.3 percent of its 3-point attempts during a disappointing 2014-15 season. UW returns just four scholarship players from the team that finished 16-15 overall and 5-13 in Pac-12 play last season. Green’s commitment fills the 12th of 13 available scholarships.

The Huskies also recently added 6-foot-9 forward Matthew Atewe, a transfer from Auburn, though he must sit out the upcoming season.

Numbers-wise, Atewe and Green help compensate for the loss of three players who chose to transfer at season’s end — starting point guard and leading scorer Nigel Williams-Goss, sophomore guard Darin Johnson and junior center Gilles Dierickx.
