BELLINGHAM — The U.S. Department of Education is investigating Western Washington University over its response to a report of sexual violence.
The school says the investigation by the Office for Civil Rights is automatic after a Western student sent a complaint to the federal government.
The investigation falls under federal Title IX law regarding response to a report of sexual violence.
Western spokesman Paul Cocke says the university welcomes the investigation because it provides another opportunity to review campus policies and to showcase the school’s commitment to providing a safe campus for all.
During the investigation, Western will be on a list that includes more than 100 colleges and universities undergoing similar inquiries.
