Rock on at Everett rock and gem show this weekend

This isn’t your father’s rock fest, though there are lots of stoners.

At this weekend’s Everett Rock &Gem Club, there are some from the prehistoric age. The highlight of the weekend is dinosaur bones.

There are two femur bones that visitors can get up close and personal with, and even bring home. The bones are in a silent auction.

“It’s one of the most unusual items for our show,” said show organizer Mel Buhr. “It is fossilized and millions of years old. They weigh about 14 pounds apiece.”

Buhr said the club hopes to get bids of several hundred dollars each for the bonafide bones.

“It has been authenticated by Burke Museum in Seattle so we know they’re the real thing,” he said. “It was donated to our club from a longtime collector’s estate. Our club is well known so they contacted us. We are often contacted by relatives of deceased rock hounds who are wondering what to do with them.”

If you can get your kids away from the dinosaur bones, there’s an activity area for youth. Every kid gets a free polished rock. There are door prizes for adults.

About a dozen pieces by Northwest Stone Sculptors Association will be on display.

The show has numerous exhibits from Rock &Gem Club members and vendors selling rock supplies.

“There will be all kinds of rocks, agates, petrified wood,” Buhr said.

Members will be on hand to answer questions.

Members range from 6 to 98. The club is a nonprofit educational and recreational group for rock hounds. It meets at 7 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month at Everett United Church of Christ, 2624 Rockefeller Ave., Everett.

The show is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 2 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 3 at the Everett Community College Fitness Center, 2206 Tower St. Admission and parking are free.
