Obum Gwacham made the very unusual transition from receiver to defensive end prior to his senior year at Oregon State, a move coaches encouraged to improve their depth on the line, as well as his chances at a pro career. The move paid off for Gwacham Saturday when he was picked by Seattle in the sixth round of the 2015 draft.
Gwacham, who moved form Nigeria to California when he was seven, comes to the Seahawks as a very athletic but raw defensive line prospect. By his own admission, he is just scratching the surface of his ability as a pass rusher, but he also is athletic enough to have participated in track and field at OSU, high jumping 7-feet, 1 ¾ inches and triple jumping more than 49 feet.
Gwacham, who played receiver at around 220 pounds, said he is currently up to 245, and will happily gain more weight (or lose it) if the Seahawks ask him to do so. Gwacham also played special teams at Oregon State and expressed a desire to do that in Seattle, something he’ll need to do and do well to make the roster as a sixth-round pick.
