NEW YORK — Police say a suspect is in custody in the shooting of a plainclothes New York City police officer who was critically wounded Saturday evening.
A police spokeswoman says a preliminary investigation shows the suspect fired at least two rounds into the unmarked car the on-duty officer was riding in.
Deputy Chief Kim Royster says the unidentified officer was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in Queens.
She says officers noticed a pull on the suspect’s waistband that may have indicated he was armed and approached him before he turned and fired at them.
City Hall officials say the mayor is at the hospital.
After the shooting police flooded the scene to search for suspects, and officers could be seen walking on roofs and searching house-by-house with flashlights.
