SUMNER — Police say a suspected burglar hiding in a Sumner home choked and hit a police dog in hopes of avoiding arrest.
The News Tribune reported that it’s not revealing the man’s identity because he hasn’t been charged with a crime. Pierce County prosecutors say they’ll decide on Monday whether to file charges.
Puyallup police say Maverick, a German shepherd with the department since 2012, was back at work Friday.
Sumner police were called to the house at about 8 p.m. on Thursday and found someone had broken in.
Two women caught surrendered, but a man refused to come out.
Officers sent Maverick into the house. Police say the man attacked the dog before officers intervened. Maverick was not seriously injured.
The suspects were taken into custody.
