PULLMAN – Washington State wide receiver Vince Mayle was selected in the fourth round of the 2015 National Football League Draft by the Cleveland Browns Saturday.
Mayle, the No. 123 overall pick, is the second Cougar taken in this year’s draft, joining defensive lineman Xavier Cooper also taken by the Browns in Friday’s third round. Mayle is the highest WSU wide receiver draft pick since Jason Hill was taken in the third round by the San Francisco 49ers in 2007.
It is the first time Washington State has had multiple players taken in the NFL Draft since 2007, Jason Hill in the third round by the 49ers and safety Eric Frampton in the fifth round by the Oakland Raiders. It is also the fifth time in program history that Cougar teammates have been drafted by the same team in an NFL draft, the last coming in 1992 when defensive backs Michael Wright and Anthony Prior were both selected by the New York Giants in the fifth and ninth rounds, respectively.
Mayle was an All-America honorable mention by Sports Illustrated and an All-Pac-12 Conference second-team selection as a redshirt-senior this past season. The 6-3, 219-pound Mayle finished the year tied for third in the country with 106 receptions and posted a Pac-12-best 1,483 yards, both WSU single-season records. The Natomas, Calif. native caught nine touchdowns, led the Pac-12 with six 100-yard games and was the only player in the country with two 250-yard games (263-Cal, 252-Arizona State), the only player in conference history to own two such games.
Mayle, one of 10 Biletnikoff Award semifinalists this season, also led the Pac-12 with 123.6 yards-per-game and was third in the league in all-purpose yards-per-game (138.3). In just two seasons at Washington State, Mayle finished his career with 148 receptions, seventh-most in WSU history, 2,022 receiving yards, 16 touchdown catches and seven career 100-yard games.
