STANWOOD — Police are asking for help finding out who mutilated two kittens in Stanwood last week.
One of the kittens was decapitated, and the other was missing a leg, Police Chief Rick Hawkins said Monday.
The kittens appeared to be about a month old, he said. A veterinarian reviewed the injuries and ruled out an attack by coyotes or other animals.
The kittens were found displayed on a sidewalk within about 20 feet from each other, he said. That was early the morning of April 27, near Port Susan Middle School.
Stanwood police posted information about the case on Facebook in hopes of generating tips. The social media site has been useful in the past, Hawkins said.
No similar animal mutilations have been reported in the area recently. One kitten was black with white paws. The other was gray with white paws.
In more than three years as Stanwood’s chief, Hawkins said he’s “never seen this type of cruelty.”
