Take in some trains (and trucks) on Mother’s Day weekend

You know what Sunday is (hint: Mother’s Day) but do you know what Saturday is?

Why, it’s National Train Day.

Swamp Creek &Western Railroad Association will have an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 9 at Edmonds Amtrak Depot, 210 Railroad St., Edmonds.

It’s in the freight room of the Edmonds depot, in the building that’s shared with Amtrak.

The free event is for all ages to admire the elaborate model layouts and learn everything about trains.

The club has drop-in visits the third Tuesday of the month, from 7 to 8 p.m. There also are open houses in June and December. For more, visit www.scwrra.org or call 425-835-2729.

Want to ride a real train and celebrate Mom’s special day in advance?

Lake Whatcom Railway at the Bellingham Railway Museum is having a Mother’s Day Train at noon May 9. Ride the rails in full-sized antique train cars. The ride lasts about 90 minutes and includes a stop at a park.

No throwing momma from the train allowed.

Mothers ride for half fare if accompanied by at least one regular fare admission. Cost is $25 for adults and $12.50 for ages 2 through 17. Free for under 2.

Advance reservation is required so there will be enough train cars on the train to accommodate everyone. Tickets can be purchased in person at the railway museum, 1320 Commercial St., from noon to 5 p.m. For information, call 360-441-0719 or go to www.bellinghamrailwaymuseum.org.

For more fun on wheels, there’s Touch-a-Truck from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 9 at Mukilteo’s Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave.

Kids of all ages can see, touch and ride in the biggest, coolest and fastest cars and trucks on the streets of Mukilteo. Police, fire and public works will have their super-duper rigs on hand.

Wonder what it’s like to be in the driver’s seat of a dump truck? How about a police car? Honk the horns. Blast the siren.

The street fair also educates about emergencies. The event is free, but you can bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Mukilteo Food Bank.

Would you want to give something as elaborate as this a name as mundane as “bread box”? A French Provincial piece practically demands the French name panetiere.
