Lynnwood’s Pivec, Edwards among standouts at 3A south track championships

EDMONDS — A little over two months ago, Mikayla Pivec and Jordyn Edwards were leading Lynnwood to the Class 3A state girls basketball championship.

On Friday night, and in another display of athletic prowess, Pivec and Edwards were among the standout performers at the Wesco 3A South track and field meet at Edmonds Stadium.

Pivec, a junior, won the girls 800 meters in 2:14.53, two days after winning the 1,600, and ran a leg on the Royals’ winning 1,600 relay team. Edwards, also a junior, won the 400 in a meet record of 56.61, and anchored the winning 800 and 1,600 relay teams.

Pivec placed fourth at state in the 1,600 last year and said that is probably her best event. “But this was one of my better times (in the 800) and it’s my fastest this year, so I’ll take it,” she said.

Her goal going forward “is to make it to state in the 1,600, 800 and the 4×400, and hopefully to place in the top five in those,” she said.

Edwards is also hoping for a strong showing at state, and particularly because of disappointments in her freshman and sophomore seasons. As a freshman, she was running third in the 400 final, but she stumbled, fell and ended up taking eighth. Last year she was slowed by a knee injury and ran only the 1,600 relay at state.

“I really want to redeem myself from freshman year since last year I didn’t have a chance to do very well (because of the injury),” Edwards said. “I really want to get the 400 this year.”

Friday’s race “was really comfortable and smooth,” she added. “I felt like I had a little slower start than usual, but in the last 200 I thought, ‘OK, I still have some energy left,’ and I just gave it all I had. It felt really good.”

For all their successes in track, Pivec and Edwards agree they are first and foremost basketball players. “I don’t really want to run track in college. I like basketball a little more,” said Pivec, the state player of the year.

“Mikayla and I really enjoy track, but basketball for both of us is our love,” agreed Edwards, who also placed second in the 200.

Friday’s meet was the start of a whirlwind weekend for Pivec. The meet wrapped up a little before 9 o’clock, and she left immediately afterward for Sea-Tac Airport — “I have a suitcase in the car,” she said — for a flight to a basketball tournament in California with her club team, ECBA Swish.

Another Pivec also had a good meet. Younger sister Malia Pivec, a sophomore who placed second to her sister in Wednesday’s 1,600, won the 3,200 in 10:47.60 and ran a leg on the winning 1,600 relay team.

Glacier Peak won both the boys and girls team titles, totaling 183 points to finish ahead of Edmonds-Woodway with 153 in the boys meet, and 196.5 points to outdistance Mountlake Terrace with 165 in the girls meet.

Individual boys champions for the Grizzlies were Dexter Carter in the 100, Will DeMaris in the 400, Ethan Jones in the javelin (161-0), and Mason Braun in the discus. Glacier Peak’s sole individual girls champion was Maya McFadden in the 100 hurdles.

Among other standout showings on Friday, Meadowdale’s Christopherson Grant, returning from a shoulder injury that sidelined him a few weeks, won both the boys 110 hurdles in 14.81 and the 300 hurdles in 39.44.

In the boys 3,200, Miler Haller of Edmonds-Woodway turned in a dominating performance, winning by almost 200 meters ahead of teammate Sam McCloughan with a meet-record time of 9:19.54.

Chinne Okoronkwo of Mountlake Terrace won the girls triple jump (37-91/2) and pole vault (12-7), with the latter a Wesco 3A meet record.

Shorecrest’s Wurrie Njadoe won the 200 in a meet-record time of 24.96 and the high jump with a mark of 5-5. On Wednesday she won the long jump with a leap of 18-5.
