MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission says a jailed vigilante leader should be transferred to another prison and allowed to see relatives who live in the United States.
The governmental commission also called on authorities to provide necessary medical attention to Nestora Salgado, who holds dual U.S. and Mexican citizenship.
The 41-year-old resident of Renton is being held at a federal prison in the state of Nayarit.
Salgado was arrested in August 2013 after people detained by the community self-defense force that she led in the southern state of Guerrero alleged they had been kidnapped. A federal judge cleared Salgado of those charges, but related state charges have kept her locked up.
Supporters say Salgado suffers from chronic pain and been on a hunger strike.
