FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets’ quarterback competition appears to be over before it even got started.
Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said Wednesday that Geno Smith is the team’s starter “right now,” and the Jets expect it to be that way heading into the season opener in September.
Coach Todd Bowles has said throughout the offseason that Smith would head into training camp taking the first-team snaps over veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is recovering from a broken leg. When asked whether Smith would be the starting quarterback when the Jets open against Cleveland, Gailey said: “Don’t make me say ‘yes,’ but probably.”
Gailey says it “wasn’t a thought” to hold a competition in camp because of the talent they’ve seen on film from Smith, who has mostly struggled in his first two seasons in the NFL.
