Now days, when we are looking for work, we open up our entire lives to prospective employers. They can check our previous places of employment, our professional and personal references, our credit history, our driving history, our rental history … virtually every detail of our lives is open for them to view to help them reach their decision to hire or not hire us.
Yet the prospective employee has no way to check on anything about a new boss. I think the time has come to implement a website for people to rate and share their experience with their former or present bosses. Of course some people are going to just say horrible things about someone when it was their fault for being fired; so it would have to have some sort of rating scale like “From 1 to 10.” And then a short limited characters “notes” section where they could, in their own words, describe their experiences.
There are many websites like,Yelp and Angie’s List where people can get a “rating” on a business and read the comments from previous customers before making that very important decision on which company to hire. People who are looking for work need the same thing to help with their very important decision.
Personally, there are places I have worked where I wished I had known what kind of person I was going to be working for before accepting the job. I have wished that I could warn future job seekers about certain people and places. I have worked for some really great people and would like to be able to share that as well. We spend one-third of our lives at work (some much more). I think job seekers should be able to find more out about the person we are going to be spending that much valuable time with other than how much they are paying and if they offer benefits or not.
