Kamiak leads list of local schools honored by theater

MUKILTEO — Kamiak High School’s performing arts department received about a dozen nominations from the 13th annual 5th Avenue Theatre Awards program, which honors musical theater productions in the state’s high schools.

Kamiak’s nominations include those for outstanding musical, direction, music direction, orchestra, scenic design, actress, chorus and ensemble. Kamiak choir teacher Nancy Duck Jefferson already has been named the 5th’s outstanding educator of the year.

Glacier Peak, Edmonds Heights, Snohomish, Woodinville, Stanwood, Arlington, Marysville-Pilchuck, Bothell, Jackson, Everett, Monroe, Mountlake Terrace and Murphy high schools also received nominations and/or honorable mentions.

Award winners will be announced at a gala June 8 at the Seattle theater. An estimated 2,100 high school students are expected to attend the ceremony, which is similar to the Tony award celebrations on Broadway. Nominated students will perform excerpts from their shows.

For the 2014-15 high school theater season, 197 nominations and 163 honorable mentions were given in 21 categories. Judges from 5th Avenue watched 104 productions at 89 schools. More than 10,000 students were involved statewide.

Winners awards for “Outstanding Actor” and “Outstanding Actress” will go on to the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City.
