Jazz in the Northwest is a natural, and more concerts are planned for the weekend.
In Arlington, the Arts Council presents its second annual “An Evening of Jazz” at 7:30 p.m. May 22 in Byrnes Performing Arts Center, Arlington High School, 18821 Crown Ridge Blvd.
Six-time Grammy award-winning baritone sax player Gary Smulyan and pianist George Cables will arrive from New York to perform and will be joined by Seattle-based bassist Chuck Deardorf and Matt Jorgensen on drums.
Arlington High School’s hot Jazz 1, under the direction of John Grabowski, with guest trumpet player Thomas Marriott, also will perform.

In Edmonds, the Rotary Club of Edmonds Daybreakers presents its 15th annual Edmonds Jazz Connection festival from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 23 at the Edmonds Masonic Center and Edmonds Conference Center in downtown Edmonds.
The festival features performances by award-winning high school jazz bands and choirs.
High school musicians scheduled to perform include those from Arlington, Cascade, Edmonds-Woodway, Lynnwood, Mariner, Meadowdale, Monroe, Mountlake Terrace and Shorewood.
Also performing are Edmonds Community College students.
